SUMMARY:ILMA Center Interfaith Iftar
DESCRIPTION:Imam Papa Bboup is inviting the Washington Ethical Society\, One Heart Sangha\, and Fabrangen to the ILMA Center’s Interfaith Iftar. Iftar is the prayer service and evening meal that breaks the daily fast during Ramadan. \n\n\n\nThis invitation only applies to One Heart Sangha\, Fabrangen\, and WES. If you are a member of another religious group you must contact IMLA before attending. \n\n\n\nParking: Large free outdoor parking next door at Veterans Plaza.  \n\n\n\nHow to get there: There are various buses that come to the vicinity of Veterans Place\, but the best way is a taxi or car.  When you enter the Civic Building\, the Iftar is usually on the ground floor.  \n\n\n\nWhat to do there: As you enter the room\, you’ll see where people have left their shoes.  ILMA people will be standing around and will stand for their prayer services. In the past\, seating for guests has been provided along the left wall of the room. \n\n\n\nWhat will happen: The prayer services have the men and boys standing toward the front of the room and the women and girls standing toward the back of the room.  There’s no particular sorting of the guests. The prayer service ends with a sermon by Imam Papa Mboup.  After his sermon\, he’ll probably ask some of the guests to speak. \n\n\n\nFood: After the prayer service\, sermon and guest speaking\, they’ll serve the food and drinks. Vegetarian options will be available

SUMMARY:Invitation - Shukke Tokudo - Sensei Museidō - May 10: 10:30am - 1:00pm
DESCRIPTION:Riverview Retreat Center in Centreville\, MD \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSensei Museidō is “Leaving (and Not Leaving) Home”\n\n\n\nYou are cordially invited to attend the Shukke Tokudo of Sensei Rebecca Museidō on May 10\, 2026 at the Riverview Retreat Center in Centreville\, MD. This is the Zen Buddhist ceremony of Leaving Home. This is the first step on the path of a monk (or in our White Plum Asanga tradition\, a “priest”). \n\n\n\nLocationRiverview Retreat Center401 Jack Elliott WayCentreville\, MD 21617 \n\n\n\nThe Significance of Shukke Tokudo \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn our Sōtō Zen tradition\, Shukke Tokudo marks the moment of “leaving home\,” not necessarily in a literal sense\, but as a profound turning of one’s life toward the Buddha Way. It is the formal entry into priest training\, grounded in the vows to awaken for the benefit of all beings. \n\n\n\nThis ceremony is not merely symbolic; it is a living transmission of intention\, discipline\, and lineage. It is a vocation. Through shaving the head\, receiving robes\, and taking vows\, the ordinand embodies a commitment to practice that is at once deeply personal and inseparable from the wider sangha. It is both a beginning and a continuation—an entry into a stream that has flowed uninterrupted for centuries. \n\n\n\nThis year\, Roshi Ed Sullivan Sangetsu of Red Rose Sangha and Sensei Jon Seichō Kenzen McCollum are honored to present the following candidates for Shukke Tokudo: \n\n\n\n• Sensei Rebecca Museidō Hawes \n\n\n\n• Dharma Holder Mike Dōshin Shanahan \n\n\n\n• Allison Shōkyo Ehrman \n\n\n\n• Davi Shōrei Hayes \n\n\n\n• Len Sōkai Sitnick \n\n\n\nFriends and family attending the ceremony at 11:00am on Sunday should bring bag lunches (if staying for the reception) and arrive by 10:30. \n\n\n\nIf they have received precepts\, they may wear their rakusu as well.
